Concert Band
Blazon
Grade 4 | 3 Mins
Blazon was commissioned by Blasorchester TV Niederbrechen from Germany as a surprise farewell present to their conductor, Michael Steiner, who had been with the band from 1998-2009. During this period the band had made a great progress musically and wanted to mark Michael’s departure with a new piece dedicated specially to him. The first performance took place on 17th May 2009 as part of his final concert with the band.
The band also wanted to celebrate their wonderful brass and percussion sections, so the piece opens with an extended and energetic fanfare, featuring in turn trumpets, horns and low brass. A change of key heralds a contrasting legato theme for the woodwinds, which is eventually taken up by the full band. The fanfare returns, accompanied by woodwind flourishes, to bring the piece to a close.
